Why This Room Works: Kitchen Edition
Ever stepped inside a perfectly designed home and wondered what makes it feel so… right? Maybe it’s the cohesive color palette, the way materials blend seamlessly, or how the layout just makes sense. The secret? More than likely, a professional interior designer is behind the scenes orchestrating countless decisions to create that effortless vibe.
I’m pulling back the curtain and kicking off a new series called “Why This Room Works.” We’ll be breaking down the nitty-gritty details of what makes certain interiors look and feel so good. Today, I’m starting with the heart of the home.
This one hits home for me… literally. Let’s take a closer look at my own kitchen and how intentional design choices in function, beauty, and comfort come together to support everyday life and, of course, culinary magic.
Kitchen Layout & Functionality

Unlike a living room, the kitchen has its own set of rules. It’s where daily life intersects with entertaining, so every move should feel effortless. In my space, the classic work triangle (fridge, stove, sink) makes navigating a breeze. The peninsula offers casual seating — perfect for chatting while someone’s busy cooking.

The stove features a 6-burner range and a pot filler nearby meaning no more hauling heavy pots from the sink. It’s these subtle but critical decisions that transform cooking from chore to pleasure. Even the backsplash — extending the countertop material right up the wall — is both easy on the eyes and seamless to clean. Effortless function, at its best.

If you’re aiming for a peaceful, uncluttered vibe, having “a place for everything” is key. We designed deep drawers for pots and pans, pull-outs for spices, and a discreet coffee station that keeps morning routines streamlined. Trash, recycling, and compost have their own hidden spots, so the counters can stay refreshingly clear.

Our kitchen takes a quiet approach — cabinets painted in a taupe hue (Benjamin Moore’s Pashmina) sets a soothing backdrop, while paneled appliances blend seamlessly into the cabinetry. A polished Taj Mahal quartzite countertop adds natural beauty and durability, while knurled brass pulls and antique brass hardware bring warmth and subtle sparkle. The result? A refined yet comfortable aesthetic that just works.
The “Wow” Factor

More times than not, it’s the little details that drive the design home. Instead of cramming in more cabinets, we installed a decorative wall sconce next to the window, adding a cozy, personal touch. Custom linen Roman shades soften the light and echo our home’s calm, collected aesthetic. As a whole, this space feels cohesive and intentional, perfectly reflecting our vision.
This kitchen works because it’s actually tailored to how we live, cook, and connect. It’s proof that a well-designed space isn’t just pretty — it’s practical, personal, and always ready to make life better.
