Oakland Hills Home Renovation Part II: Classic and Inviting Spaces for Living and Entertaining
Are you keeping up with my Oakland Hills home renovation? If not, you’re missing out. We recently unveiled our revamped kitchen and dining room, and today, the tour continues with a look at our newly transformed living room, home office, game room, and bedrooms.
In case you missed it…
To catch you up to speed, our renovation focused on breathing new life into our kitchen and reshaping the original floor plan of our main living areas. While the kitchen and dining room underwent significant structural changes, the rest of the main floor received more cosmetic updates to create a cohesive design throughout.

The front room of our home, bathed in natural light and offering the best view in the house, has always been our designated living area. While it’s beautiful, it often felt disconnected from the rest of the home and had too much wasted space around it.
You might remember from our kitchen and dining room update that we knocked down a few walls and removed the fireplace to open things up. The space that used to be our living area is now the dining room, and now, our new, reimagined living room is just across from it, perfectly blending into the new layout…
Spacious & Inviting Living Room Design
Although we didn’t increase the square footage, we made necessary cosmetic updates. The result? An airy, warm, and inviting vibe with a brand new layout that feels as if it was always meant to be…
We painted the walls in a creamy hue, perfectly complementing our custom soft gray sofa and cozy vintage beige accent chair. At the center of the room sits a charcoal round coffee table from Lulu & Georgia, featuring an elegant walnut base.
To amp up the warmth, we selected mixed material minimalist wall sconces from Workstead and layered a variety of textured elements, including a plush white area rug with a subtle gray line pattern (also from Lulu & Georgia), a brass side table from Four Hands, and sleek white nesting tables from Made Goods.
To bring life and vibrancy into the room, we incorporated pops of color through thoughtfully curated decor pieces, like the large custom mirror that doubles as art. Custom throw pillows add the final touch of bespoke charm. Let’s take a closer look…
Fabrics & Trim: Pindler and Samuel & Sons; Console Table: Ole Studio
You know I’m all about the details. So when I came across this trim, I immediately knew it was a must-have for our living room. The intricate design adds movement and interest against the neutral backdrop of the sofa. It’s these little touches that infuse a space with charm and personality.
Elegant & Inspiring Home Office
If you work from home, you know a dedicated workspace is essential. Most of my days are spent in the studio or on project sites, but I still needed a home office where I could tackle emails, brainstorm ideas, and take the occasional Zoom call. The best solution? A minimal and practical space that still makes a statement…
As the main focal point, I chose a rich caramel-toned curved writing desk from Four Hands with open interior shelving for convenient and smart hidden storage. Behind my desk, colorful modern artwork by Terri Frolich is flanked by a pair of one-of-a-kind ceramic sconces. And if someone decides to pay me a visit…
They can take a seat in my vintage corner accent chair. The muted leopard print paired with a whimsical tree stump side table adds the perfect amount of playful elegance into my office.
To tie everything together, we used the same fluted paneling from the kitchen peninsula on the neutral walls to add warmth and create a cohesive look throughout the home. Now, this is the perfect place for creativity to strike.
Grown Up Game Room
Gone are the days of Hot Wheels and train tracks. This former playroom has shed its colorful past, transforming into a grown up hangout for our 10-year-old son. We started by closing the original industrial ceiling, removing the structural pole, and replacing the flooring with a sleek and modern vibe…
We wanted a space that could grow with our son, providing his own area (ahem… glorified cave) for gaming and hanging out with his friends — but only after he’s finished his homework at his designated workspace, of course. To strike the right balance, we incorporated some playful elements. The focal point is undeniably the stunning blue wallpaper — it practically pops off the wall.
To counterbalance the boldness and add some cheer, we chose a muted mustard-colored TV stand and a cozy navy sofa that practically begs you to sink in for movie night. The large blue patterned area rug ties everything together, grounding the space and adding another layer of visual interest.
Modern & Luxurious Bedroom Design
Washed in the same peaceful neutral hues found throughout our home, we curated a tranquil, inviting ambiance in the bedrooms…
Blending vintage pieces with custom upholstery and CB2 bedding, we crafted a primary bedroom that embraces comfort and relaxation. From the bedding to the headboard to the walls dressed in grasscloth wallpaper, clean lines, soothing textures, and light wood accents come together to perfectly complete this serene atmosphere.
In the second bedroom, we installed a custom headboard with built-in nightstands — hello, sleek functionality. Modern black sconces provide the perfect amount of contrast and are ideal for late-night reading before bed. Finally, the bold patterned duvet adds a touch of personality without overwhelming the space.
It’s Your Turn…
Over the past decade, our home has taken on many forms, but this latest renovation truly reflects our family best… and it doesn’t get much better than that.
Feeling inspired and ready for a home that reflects you? We’re here to support you.
Cheers,
Melanie
