California Modern Design: What is it and How We’re Leading the Way

“I know this style… this is a Melanie Coddington room!” I was in the bathroom of a showcase suite I had designed, the voice coming from the large bedroom. Up until that moment, I thought I didn’t have a discernible design style. I always told clients our style is their style. It turns out, I do have a signature style. I call it California Modern. 

What is California Modern? 

Think of California Modern as your escape from the daily grind. It involves a design approach that breathes tranquility into your space, reflecting the laid-back yet sophisticated California vibe that everyone loves. It’s about prioritizing your comfort and well-being. So, what design elements define California Modern? I’m so glad you asked…

1. Serene Colors

To create the serene atmosphere California Modern is known for, we use light, contemporary colors and avoid anything too loud or busy. We stick to a simple palette of three hues per room, often in varying shades of the same color, like light and medium blue. This approach creates harmony and a seamless visual flow throughout your home.

2. Natural Materials

We love using stone, wood, and other natural materials to create an earthy, grounding vibe. Instead of harsh, high-gloss plastics or shiny metallics, we incorporate elements found in nature — think wood beams, stone accents, and woven baskets. These materials keep the space feeling calm and inviting without overwhelming the senses.

3. Cozy Furnishings

California Modern design is all about blending materials. We layer natural elements with soft textiles to create inviting, lived-in spaces. Custom furniture plays a huge role in the process. By tailoring each piece to our clients’ exact needs, we seamlessly blend comfort and style, ensuring every element contributes to a genuinely relaxing environment.

Pattern repetition is a key element in California Modern interiors. Instead of mixing too many patterns, which can make a space feel busy, we repeat key patterns throughout the home. We tend to stick to consistent geometric designs to maintain interest while keeping the look cohesive and peaceful.

We integrate ample storage for toys, games, or other items you prefer to keep out of sight, keeping everything practical and peaceful.
