Sustainable Furniture and Design

Palo Alto Interior Designers

Building on our healthy home post, we wanted to share some of our favorite sources for eco-friendly furniture and accessories.  We believe that health, happiness, and home are interconnected and it’s easier than ever to combine style and sustainability.  Here are some design tips and producers of environmentally minded decor that we love.

Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood is not only a timeless look but it’s a way to give a material a second life.  The options are endless for potential design uses from exposed ceiling beams to a reclaimed dining room table.  Depending on the type and condition of the wood, it can also last for decades in it’s repurposed role.

Desiron

Desiron is an American furniture manufacturer specializing in hand-crafted custom items for your living, dining, bedroom, and office. Their collection of furniture is made in a solar-powered factory in New Jersey, using the finest, sustainable FSC hardwoods, and premium recycled materials.

Cisco Home

Cisco Home uses sustainable materials and building methods for its line of products that range from sofas to chandeliers. Cisco introduced their Inside Green technology which is their method of building furniture with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified woods, organic latex, jute, hemp, organic cotton and wood. These materials are known for their longevity and durability without sacrificing the look and feel of contemporary styles.

Secondhand and Vintage Furniture

Vintage furniture is a great way to recycle a piece of furniture and give it a new life. Buying secondhand not only helps the environment but it brings a bit of history into your home.  We love using vintage furniture in our designs.  Here are a few of our favorite places to pick up beautiful and interesting pieces: 1st Dibs, Big Daddy’s Antiques, and Previously Owned by a Gay Man. We love Chairish and we even list items on their site.  Also, don’t forget to go local. Local vintage shops and flea markets are filled with design gems!
